Today is Love dare thirty-four, Love celebrates godliness. Definition of Godliness is careful observance of, or conformity to the laws of God the state or quality of being godly piety. We can then say being Godly means exhibiting the characteristics of God. God’s characteristics he shares with us are: holiness, wisdom, truthfulness, love, goodness, faithfulness, mercy, kindness, patience, mercy, kindness, grace, and righteousness. All of these are given to us from the Holy Spirit in us, no matter how hard we try, we cannot attain these on our own apart from Christ.
The Love dare book said, “Sometimes by accepting modern culture’s take on what to applaud in our spouse, we can even be guilty of encouraging them to sin-perhaps by feeding their vanity, or by letting boys be boys.” This really stood out to me, because how many of us, me included, have given into an area with our spouse because we just wanted to keep the peace? We knew it was wrong but in our mind we convinced ourselves that the uncomfortable conversation wasn’t worth it, and giving into this one thing was okay, just this once, right? All the while we were encouraging our spouses to sin, to give into temptation. What were we thinking? We can never save our spouses, but we can encourage them to follow the one who can, Jesus.
A little over a week ago we purchased a used car. We took the title to one of the DMV offices to register it into our name. We found out three owners prior to us forgot to sign a certain paper that was needed for the odometer reading. The lady refused to put the title in our name and told us we had to find this person and have them sign the paper before we could have the vehicle registered into our name. My mind was reeling, how on earth were we going to find this person? The car had changed hands three times since this person owned it and where would we begin to look?
We called a friend in the car business and he asked a person who works in the title field and we were given the idea of signing the title ourselves to get it put into our name. Here we were given the temptation of signing the title committing forgery to get what we needed, who would know right? There was no other way and we needed the title in our name. My husband said, “We are going to drive to the address of the previous owner and see if they still live there. It’s worth a shot. We are not forging someone else’s name no matter what. There is another way.” Long story short we drove to the address which turned out to be the right address. We got the paper signed and were able to get the car registered into our name, legally.
Psalm 25:21 (NLT)
May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you.
Praise Jesus my husband is a man of integrity and honesty. We will never have to know what would’ve happened had we broken the law. We all know the answer to that, we would’ve got caught. Sin always has consequences and we always get caught. Today I am thankful for my husband’s willingness to follow Jesus, to trust in Him no matter what.
Proverbs 10:9 (NLT)
People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.
My prayer for us today is to encourage our spouses when they display integrity and honesty. We should always encourage our husbands to walk in Godliness, never to walk in sin. A momentary lapse in judgement has lasting consequences.
